Roller Coasters

Yesterday was quite the roller-coaster day, as most book release days seem to be. I hit a number of stores on my way to the signing, and that was all up-and-down. At my neighborhood B&N, the bookseller there recognized me as a customer but hadn't realized I was also an author. They had a TON of books. Then I went to a Borders that had two copies shelved spine-out -- and Borders has always been my big seller, where most of my sales have come, where the order for the last book went up (but not up enough to counter the down order from B&N). Scary. But then the next Borders had a number of copies, plus some of the older books, and the new ones were on a front table. The next B&N had a ton of books, the whole series minus Once Upon Stilettos, which remains the forgotten stepchild book, but again they were just back on the shelves instead of in any kind of new fiction display.

Then I had an AMAZING signing. People were there! People I didn't even know! They asked questions, and we had a nice discussion, then I signed lots of books. I think that may have been my biggest turnout that wasn't part of some other event or where I didn't beg all my friends to come. So here's a shout-out to all the TCU Horned Frogs (yes, that really is the school mascot) and other Fort Worth-area folks who showed up. P.N. Elrod, editor of My Big, Fat Supernatural Wedding, came, and afterward we went out for dinner and shop talk.

It does look like I'll have to cancel my blood vendetta against B&N because they seem to be the one stocking the book in large quantities, after last year when they barely carried the last book. It does appear that they've seen The Error of Their Ways. I think that's the largest number of copies I've seen stuck in the shelves without any kind of front display. Normally, when a chain orders that many copies, the publisher coughs up some co-op money for front-of-store display (or, quite often, the store places a huge order because the publisher agrees to cough up co-op money for front-of-store display). This looks like B&N has more confidence in the book than the publisher does. Meanwhile, my area Borders other than the ones I visited yesterday still aren't showing the book as in stock -- including the one where I have a signing next week. Any reports from the field on that? Where are you finding books? I need to know where to throw my book-buying loyalty for the year. Borders has better coupons, but B&N is practically next door. Wouldn't it be cool if both chains got into a book at the same time?

Now for one more FAQ that came up in comments yesterday but that I'll answer here so everyone can see it:
What are these "numbers" this book needs to hit in order to get book 5?
I honestly have no idea. I have not been given a target. The reason given when they declined to buy book 5 was merely that the numbers didn't warrant it, and that the sales of each book were lower than for the previous book, so they saw it as diminishing returns. A big part of it was the fact that B&N really slashed their order for the third book, which meant the print run was drastically lower, which meant sales were likely to be lower.

However, the earlier books were still selling steadily rather than dying off, which made it nearly impossible for the newer books to catch up to the head start. My agent checked Bookscan, which reports book sales at certain stores, and found that my numbers were comparable to those of other books similar to mine from other publishers where the publishers were continuing the series or doing mass-market reprints. All of my books have gone into multiple printings, even months after release, and the sell-through numbers seem to be what I've generally heard qualify as "success." That muddies the waters somewhat. My unsubstantiated guess is that my particular imprint wanted to move away from chick lit, and nothing short of huge bestselling status would change matters (and bestselling status is a self-fulfilling prophecy, which is the subject of its own rant), so what I can hope for is that the fact that Amazon listing my books as urban fantasy (last I checked, the new one was the #6 urban fantasy) seems to be helping sales, plus the fact that my new editor is on the sf/f side of the house might help get the series new life with a new classification if sales are strong enough. But I don't know what "enough" is.

In short, this is a funny business.

And now I have to work on an essay that's due tomorrow. I should never accept a project with a deadline in a release week, but I sometimes have issues with the word "no" when something sounds fun.

If I'm going to get all my friends hooked, I have to buy the first one (which I got from the library)...on top of the new one. But I am so broke (sigh). I'll get on that as soon as I have some money. In the meantime I did recommend the series everywhere I hang out.

Interesting way the book is being promoted. Thanks for writing about that aspect of the business: many writers (except for the folks on Fangs_Fur_Fey and a few others) gloss over the business/store aspects of sales and stay with the part they know very well: the writing!

One of the big reasons I'm sticking with your series is A) the characters are almost all likable, even Idris, the incompentent attention-deficited wizard (funny in itself) B) Owen's mystery of who he really is and where he came from and then C) the hijinks, which remind me of Jim Butcher's Dresden series, only on a lighter note, and from a young woman's perspective. It's almost like reading *Susan's* diary, if the Dresdren Files were sparkly like your New York.

I agree, I think your books need to be reclassified. The romance is completely there, but it's integrated so wholly into the magic-verse you've created, it's more of an Urban Fantasy. I like the tone, which is what I'm trying for with one of my stories, but am having a hard time from having it turn dark on me. It's easy to go dark in an urban setting, or with certain themes.

Anyhow, I'll be looking for the newest book. I hope (crosses fingers) that this one gets enough sales to warrant the publisher to justify buying the next one in the series.

Oh, and PS - I haven't been able to check the local Borders at the mall yet (sick kid), but I will tomorrow, when I send her off packing to school.

In fact, I think I'll call them to see if they have it in stock. (I'm in the LA area)

Okay, I just reserved it online from that particular bookstore. Still not sure if they actually have it in stock, but at least I got my copy! mwuhuahua!

I popped in to the B&N in Union Square yesterday, and they had no copies (sorry) -- just Enchanted, Inc shelved. I'm going to check the one closer to home in Brooklyn today to see if they have it. But right now, when I tap in my zip code (11215) it is giving me "Not in Stock" in like, ALL NYC stores. (!!!) But perhaps it's only that store stock and web stock have not been updated yet?

I have to say, until 8 months ago I lived in Vancouver, Canada, and found your books easily... and saw them more than once on the front tables. Just did an availability check via Chapters online, and it appears most stores in the Vancouver area are carrying quite a few copies.

Border's on Michigan in Chicago had two in stock in literature and spine-out. Now there is only 1!

The two I ordered for gifts last week were actually shipped last week.

My mom stayed for it after work after I called her. She didn't realize she knew you/of you from RWA stuff, so she was pleased. I have to go pick up my copy of the book from her very soon. 8-) Then I have to get the rest of the series... sigh...

Thanks for sending your mom! I recognized her right away and even knew she was your mom, which was kind of odd, but I do think we've met through RWA stuff before.

She recognized you, just didn't put face and name together until last night.

According to the web, all but one of the Manhattan Borders stores have it (or probably have it, it says "likely in stock"). The other tri-state (NY, NJ, CT) stores that come up when I search from my zip code are hit and miss, but more of them "likely" have it (9), than not (7). I was at one of the Manhattan stores on Monday and they already had three copies of the book out, but they were shelved spine-out in fiction/literature and as far as I could tell there weren't copies on any of the tables up front.

Of the older books, the other one they had at that store was a single copy of Damsel (with the shiny cover). A quick search shows Enchanted available at 2 of the 5 Manhattan Borders stores, Stilletos at 1, and Damsel at 4. No one store seems to have all four books.

My local Barnes and Noble just closed, so I'm pretty mad at them at the moment. And the fact that, according to the web, the book isn't available at any of the Manhattan stores (although it is available for same day delivery in Manhattan), isn't helping.

So maybe I'll hold off on cancelling the vendetta. :-)

I wonder if the huge amount of stock at the B&N stores here is just a Texas thing because of the title.

I'm just really annoyed about our store closing. There are still both a Barnes and Noble and a Borders in walking distance, but neither is as convenient or as comfortable to browse.

I think you're probably right about the Texas thing. Or perhaps it's a combination of that and realizing that your earlier books have sold better in your local stores than elsewhere (possibly because when they did actually have them in stock, you stopped in to sign them).

Another check of both chains' New York area stores shows that there is now one Manhattan B&N with Don't Hex in stock (though that is the only one of the 59 stores that show up as in or near my zip code that does have it). And the count of Borders that probably have it has gone up as well, with only six of the 21 stores that my search turns up now showing the book as a special order (one of those continues to be the Columbus Circle store).

My local Borders had it, but it was on the shelf (face out) rather than the new fiction table. If it makes you feel any better, of the other two new releases that I went in yesterday to grab, one was on the new fiction table that was for some reason hidden near the genres rather than up front where I remembered it being, and the other hadn't even been pulled out of the back yet (though the employee was very happy to grab it, saw the title, and tucked one of that one and one of yours away for herself to buy later =)

I'm looking forward to picking up my copy - I know several folks who like this series, so let's hope you can get the 5th book sold!

BTW, I'm a friend of [info]spielmadchen and we very briefly met in the con suite at the Austin WFC (which I chaired, hence the need for a brief chat).

Good news -- I saw "Don't Hex With Texas" on Amazon's front page today!

Huzzah on the great signing. does *happy spoon dance in red stilletoes* Here's hoping the editor changes mind and goes for book 5.
30th-Apr-2008 11:07 pm (UTC) - Just read the book
I just wanted to say how much I loved the book, I spent the whole afternoon reading it and absolutely loved it. I started reading the series about a year before Damsel Under Stress came out, and these last two books have been the highlight of my finals week. Thank you so much for writing these books!

I got my note from Amazon.com saying "your order has shipped" while I was on vaca, so I can't wait to see it once back to work! squee! :D

I am sooooo annoyed with myself! I got the book delivered from Amazon yesterday and finished last night. I hate when I do that...especially knowing there isn't another one in the works. Loved it! Still working on what town you based Cobb on :)
I'm spreading the word to all my friends. I want a book 5! Love your blog.

I stopped by my local Barnes and Noble last night and bought a copy, once I could locate it (under general fiction, not where it really ought to be shelved by my way of thinking). Still, they had about 6 copies, so I hope they sell well and fast - I'd hate to not know how you intend the series to end!

4 copies around 7PM at the Arboretum Barnes & Noble in Austin on Tuesday.

That's the only data point I have. Not likely to be able to get more this week, either, unless you ask very nicely about a specific store in the Austin area (and north is easier than south).

No need to travel around getting a book count. I try to put limits on my obsession. :-) It's easy to drive yourself crazy with this stuff.

But now I'm wondering what their original order was. Here, I'm seeing at least 10 copies per store at B&N, so if they got ten and were down to 4 on Tuesday, that's good, and that's a big store, so they're likely to have a larger order.
2nd-May-2008 07:29 pm (UTC)
I got it from Amazon on Wednesday. (YEAH) and the library got their copy Yesterday. YES! Will do a report on it soon. I will say that I can't wait to see what happens next.
