Bad News

shoe
I just got news from my agent that my publisher has passed on book five. They said the numbers just weren't there because each book was selling less than the one before.

Never mind that the first book has been out a year longer and continues to sell steadily, which means that the series itself has room for growth and sales of the second book could catch up.

Needless to say, I'm a wee bit upset and rather pissed-off. Chocolate may be needed.

However, the door isn't entirely closed. My agent is going to check with a few other publishers to see if anyone's interested in closing out the series (and getting the next phase of it), and there's always the possibility that my publisher could come crawling back to me, begging for book five, if the series suddenly takes off and they see a spike in sales.

So, I guess we're in the same situation we were, but more desperate (gee, I'm having flashbacks from December 2002 when Fox cancelled Firefly and we were all writing letters to other networks). If you want the chance of seeing book five, keep telling people about the books. If you checked them out of the library or borrowed the book from a friend, buy a copy (new!). If friends want to borrow your copies, make them buy their own. Keep on spreading the word. If sales do well, other publishers and my old publisher will be more likely to reconsider. Letters to the publisher do no good because all they care about is the number of copies sold, and they have a direct measurement of that. Buying a book or making sure a book gets bought is the only way to record a "vote" for it.

Book 4 is, as far as I know, still a go (since they've paid me for it), and even if we don't get book 5, it does have a good ending that could work as a series ending. However, they probably will support book 4 even less now, so it may be the "orphan" book that's really hard to find. Without book five, you just won't get to find out what Owen's story really is, or what's really been going on with Idris.

Now I'm going to work that much harder on the thing I started work on last night. And then come up with something even more brilliant that can now go to all publishers, and they will RUE THE DAY. Ahem.

How dare the publisher deprive us of getting all of Owen's story. I rushed out and bought my copy during the first week. Didn't they notice?

May that publisher soon rue the day for their shortsightedness.

Take care of yourself. I'm buying your next book whether or not Owen's in it. (And I'm also looking forward to buying E,Inc. #4)

Wow, I guess the morning writing really was a sign of the apocalypse. I'm so sorry sweetie. There's nothing I look forward to reading more these days.

Hey Shanna,
Wow that seriously sucks! I need chocolate too now! I really loved Damsel Under Stress and I've told all my friends about the series and I sometimes give them the books as presents. I go back to work at the bookstore in a couple weeks and I will try and sell sell sell. How dare they pass on it...Is there some other way to get it out there so we know what happens to Owen if they insist on being stupid about it? I know its a let down but try not to worry about it too much. You're an amazing writer and everyone whose read Enchanted Inc. or any of the others knows it.
Big hug,

Esther Clark

22nd-May-2007 11:28 pm (UTC) - I'm spreading the word!

Hi Shanna,
I'm spreading the word and I'm asking for Damsel in every Target and bookstore I visit, even though I have a copy. (I'm half-way done.) I really hope that another publisher picks up book 5. I'll say a prayer for you. Would you consider self-publishing? I'm sure we'd all buy multiple copies so you could show prospective publishers how much we love your books. Chin up, girl. The fat lady hasn't sung just yet! Stace from RI

You aren't one of those 'this publisher owns my name' crew, are you? I hope not!

Stupid publishers. Like I've said before; if they spent less on the gou se they send in the catalogs (full color book jackets and the like), they could make books a wee bit cheaper and they'd sell a hell of a lot more.

Moonbrains.
22nd-May-2007 11:58 pm (UTC)
Oh, Shanna. That just SUCKS.

Do you think it occurred to them that maybe it's not selling as well because it's not being carried/advertised, etc. the way the previous ones were? GAH. AssHATS.

23rd-May-2007 12:56 am (UTC) - disappointed
I absolutely love this series! And I just got my copy of Damsel from UPS yesterday and immediately went to the last few pages. Yes, I have to read the end first before I can read the rest of the book. Anyway, I hope you are able to find another publisher because this is a great series -- a nice cross-section of genres. After reading your blog post, I immediately went to my e-mail, where ironically an e-mail loop I'm on had a new topic: books you're currently reading. Of course, I plugged the series and your website. I will plug your books whereever and whenever I can.

Has the books been cross marketed to the SF/F or Romance readers at all? I mean by the publisher? Because these books are a great crossover series that appeals to lots more than the lit group. What with Urban Fantasy being so popular, it's a shame it gets buried in the lit section instead of marketed to people who would like the fantasy and romantic elements! It also doesn't help that there's been no Mass Market edition of Enchanted, Inc. to lure in prospective readers. Shame on them!

I'm very disappointed with your publisher, and I'm ready and willing to write them to tell them how I feel! To Whom would I need to address this letter?

23rd-May-2007 04:39 am (UTC)
Bummer.

Chocolate makes everything better. I hope another publisher picks it up!
23rd-May-2007 05:44 am (UTC)
oh no oh no... i LOVE this series! how could they do that?! (well okay, i know *how*, it's more of how DARE they?!)

i'm from the philippines, and i had to order the second and third books from amazon (still waiting for the third book, even if i pre-ordered. agh!)... but i'll try to get more people to buy it. aside from spreading the word, is there anything else we can do to help? or are you already pitching it to other publishing houses?
23rd-May-2007 06:56 pm (UTC)
Shanna, I'm so terribly sorry! My copy of "Damsel" should be coming in from Chapters (Canada) any minute now - this sucks! These are awesome books - it's a great premise and well written. Hang in there, sweetie! The Browncoats rallied for Serenity - we'll come to your rescue as well!
23rd-May-2007 11:37 pm (UTC)
Oh no, that's awful. I hope you manage to work something out and that your new project does well.

My copy of book 3 arrived today from amazon uk, so I'll start reading it tomorrow.
24th-May-2007 02:44 am (UTC)
I'm so sorry! **hugs** And bummed, too.
24th-May-2007 08:42 am (UTC) - book 5
That totally sucks. I hope someone picks it up. Here is a virtual hug...

You have me hooked and I look forward to reading all 5 books :)

Since coming across your blog I have read all the archives and am now finally up to date...started from the beginning and read to the latest post. I love hearing about the creative process and about your life as a real person. I think sometimes I think of authors as larger than life beings. It is refreshing to read about your everyday goings on. (whoa, if this doesn't make much sense, it may be because I am a bit sleep deprived)

Again, I love your work and I was sorry to hear about book 5, but I am sure someone will pick it up...if they know what's good for them! I look forward to reading it.

Best wishes,

~ Kelley

I'm so sorry to hear that... I was just linked here from another member on Voyageronline.com.au in response to my post about how much I loved book three.

I wish you every success and will continue to tell people about how wonderful these books are!
26th-May-2007 12:35 pm (UTC)
Arrggh! I read the news last night but hadn't time to respond... so I'll do it now. I felt immensely disappointed (probably didn't get anywherer near what you must be feeling). I really, really, really would like to know how it continues. I want to read the whole series!! *jumping up and down* They have to give the books a chance, why make that decision now already! Book 3 still has to be released here (= Belgium), I think that won't be until end of the year, right? I suggested book series as a gift when my mom asked me if I knew something that she could buy for our cousin. She recently bought book 1 on my suggestion so she could use book 2, unfornately the book store didn't have it and had to order it, but my mom couldn't wait till tuesday cause the party is tonight... Gah they should just have it lying on the shelves in the store!

Last night and this morning I've been trying to think of ways to help so book 5 will get out here. So far I haven't got much ideas, other then that it might be released as an ebook, maybe by yourself and we just pay for it via paypal and you sent us a link to download it? Okay, now that I write that, it sound really selfish... sorry.

I too will keep fingers and toes crossed that it will get picked up!! I'm so sorry to hear this news and I'm really looking forward to find out what this new project is about. I hope you won't let this get to you cause you are a brilliant writer *hugs*.

This may actually not affect the Dutch language version, which I hear is doing very well. The Dutch publisher isn't related to the US publisher, and sales of the foreign langauge editions don't affect decisions about the US editions, other than perhaps in spreading word of mouth. I haven't yet sold book 4 in Dutch (it might help if I sent them the manuscript, but I'm doing some minor adjustments on it), and I guess if I did have time to write book 5 on spec, there's a chance that they'd buy it even if it wasn't being published in the US if the Dutch version of the series continues to sell well. And then I guess all the American fans would have to learn to read Dutch. :-)
28th-May-2007 11:56 am (UTC)
I guess that is good news then for us, Dutch fans, that is if you will sell the book(s) to the Dutch publisher. I'm still gonna buy the paperback version of damsel when it's released (will be released?). I have the english ebook version on my computer and the dutch paper version on my book shelve :-)

So I really do hope you sell book 4 in Dutch, I promise I'll buy it, and I'm doing everything possible to get people in my surroundings to also do that :-) It would be fabulous if book 5 would follow too, I'm dying to know what the story of Owen and Idris is (are they related??? :-) ) and if it should be the case, I will offer my help to my fellow fans in the US with reading Dutch :-)

But I'm still keeping fingers and toes crossed for good news for every fan out there. It sucks to feel like there's so little we can do to help :-(
27th-May-2007 01:50 am (UTC)
THEY CANT DO THAT!!!
I need all the books. *sniffs* I'll have to write them nasty letters about not buying any titles from them till they do. ;) I am really really hoping that someone will publish book 5. I know lots of people (besides and including those here) can't wait till book 4. I am sending you chocolate and hgus. now I am really bummed
28th-May-2007 11:47 pm (UTC)
Ack! So sorry! And I was at the bookstore today, they had one copy left of #3 on the new books table and one copy of #1 in fiction. I enjoyed #3 immensely and am very much looking forward to #4. My mom will be upset as well as she likes the books very much. I will wait until she is done with the latest before I tell her the news. :-(

*hugs*
29th-May-2007 09:05 pm (UTC)
Okay, I want to go out and buy the books new...but, where is the best place? #3 isn't at my local B&N, so should I ask them to order it?

Does it make a different where I get it? i.e. Amazon, BN.com, an actual B&N store?
29th-May-2007 09:49 pm (UTC)
Ultimately, it doesn't matter that much if you buy online or in a store. However, if you go to a store that isn't carrying it and order it through the store, then if that store gets enough requests for the book, they may end up carrying it. Plus, talking to someone to order it and making conversation of the "Wow, I can't believe you don't have this! It's a great series!" variety might just get the people in the store interested enough to order it for the store.
31st-May-2007 09:38 pm (UTC) - :(
Argh! Argh! Argh! Not cool!

I am hoping what happened with Moira J. Moore happens with you- she got told they wouldn't buy book #3 of her awesome Hero series, then they did after all.

In the meantime, I will put up a very happy review of DUS as soon as I'm done reading it, and hope that helps the cause a bit.
